Alex Robinson is the artist and writer behind the hit graphic novels Box Office Poison, Tricked and his newest work, Too Cool to Be Forgotten. Recently, Max got to talk with Robinson about his work.

Your work on and appears to be heavily autobiographical. Is this actually the case or is that a common misinterpretation?

I used to be sort of in denial that was as autobiographical as people seemed to think it was but looking back now–I finished the almost ten years ago I realize it was closer than I thought. Not necessarily in terms of the details of my life, though there is some of that, but more in terms of the things I was working out in my head. I would say it was psychologically autobiographical, if that didn’t sound too pretentious. Obviously certain details were taken from my own life: Sherman worked in a bookstore, Ed was an aspiring cartoonist, I had a crazy landlady, but for the most part it was fiction.

With Too Cool I definitely took a lot of elements from my own life and put them in the story. That was an inspiration for doing the , a sort of therapy dealing with my feelings about growing up and high school and whatnot. It didn’t quite pan out the way I expected, but there were still a lot of details from my own life. Andy’s house is the house I grew up in, for instance, but some things are different. I didn’t have an older brother or sister, for instance.

It gets harder to take stuff from my own current life since my experience is so limited now. I work at home as a full time cartoonist, so it makes it harder to mine my own life.

The subject of struggling as an artist plays a major role in BOP. Now that both that piece and have achieved a certain level of success, do you personally still feel some of those pressures? How has your outlook changed (if at all) as your work has received acknowledgment?

Well, the pressures are still there. It’s the same basic neuroses but they’re just updated to suit my current position. That was one of the things I wrestled with in , the idea of Now That You Got It how do you Keep It and how do you get more. You always have to be careful talking about these kinds of ideas because it’s easy to seem like an ungrateful whiner. That said, I’m constantly battling with my own professional jealousy, as a friend put it. I’m always wary of who is “ahead” of me in the biz and who is coming up behind. I’m also a glass-half-empty kind of person so even with whatever successes I’ve achieved I tend to downplay them or spin them in a negative way. It’s terrible!

How did you get your start? What advice do you have (if any) for those who want to try their hand at creating a graphic novel?

After I graduated from school I started doing mini comics and sending them to publishers. After goofing off through four years of college I figured it was time to get serious so I really tried to be as productive as I could. Eventually, Antarctic Press picked up what would become the serialized version of and it just kind of grew from there.

I guess my advice is to do it if you really love it. There’s so little money to be made that you can’t think of it as an occupation so much as a hobby. Once you accept that you’ll be a lot happier (or less unhappy). The key for me was creating the kind of comic I wanted to read. Comics are very labor intensive and you’re going to be spending a lot time with these characters and situations so you’d better make sure it’s something you enjoy.

On a more specific and practical note, you might want to consider making the first few chapters of your “novel” fairly self-contained. This way, if you get sick of the concept you can abort the project and just offer those chapters as a shorter work (if you’ll notice the first sixty pages of are more or less simple short stories in which I was getting to know the characters, there isn’t really any overall plot).

In most cases, you seem to pull double duty, both writing and drawing your work. Is there a particular reason for this? Do you have any interest in collaborating or do you just prefer to work alone?

I guess ever since I started making my own comics as a kid I did it all myself so I just never stopped. I enjoy both aspects so I want to do both. I think most people seem to like my writing better than my but I have much more fun drawing than I do writing. They just use different parts of your brain, I guess.

I think I prefer to work alone but I’d be curious to try collaboration. I think the problem is that everyone wants to collaborate with someone better than them, right? Most of the people who have talked to me about collaborating are aspiring amateurs. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if I feel like I can draw better than someone there’s not really much incentive for me to write something with that person in mind–I would just draw it myself. Similarly, I would love to draw from an Alan Moore script or write a story for John Cassaday to draw, but I’m sure they both have better things to do and would lump me in with the “aspiring amateur” group.

I think it would be interesting to write a script knowing that someone else would be drawing it. I know I have certain limitations as an artist so I would never write, say, a fight on the rooftop of a cathedral because I know I could never draw that. So writing a script for a really good versatile artist would be an interesting experiment.

With the continuing popularity of comic -based movies, both large (Dark Knight, Iron Man) and smaller (American Splendor, Ghost World), are there any plans to transfer you’re work to the big screen or other media? Is that even something you would want?

There have been some nibbles over the years but nothing that has panned out. We’ve all heard stories about the nightmarish development hell that is hollywood so I’m not exactly betting on anything happening but I’m hopeful. Personally, I would love for it to happen. I don’t have a lot of faith that a good movie would come out of it–it’s more for the fame/respect and, most of all, the money. Once I got the cash they could do whatever they wanted. Cast Carrot Top as Sherman or the Jonas Brothers play Andy Wicks, I don’t care–actually that last one might be good because it means the movie would at least make money. Where do I sign?

What can fans, (myself included) look forward to? What projects are you working on or releasing in the near future?

My next project is kind of out of left field on a few levels. Harper Collins approached me about a new series they’re doing where different cartoonists adapt classic stories into comics form and I thought it sounded like an interesting project. It’s proven a real challenge on a few fronts but hopefully it will be out in time for 2009. I’m adapting L. Frank Baum’sA Kidnapped Santa Claus.” It will be a short , only sixty pages or so. I have some ideas for stuff after that but nothing definite. I like the idea of doing another very long , like , but maybe serialize it over a few paperbacks. I don’t know if I could wait to release it in one big chunk this time, since it would probably take me ten years to do a five hundred page .

Thank you, Alex.

Midway
Well, it seems as if is getting closer to the grave. This past weekend, the wall street journal reported, that Summer Redstone (the majority controller in ) sold off his majority stock for $100,000. Now you might be thinking that buying the majority of a company for that low, roughly $0.0012 per share, is a great . But by taking on the majority of stock, investor Mark Thomas also took on the $70 million in secured and unsecured debt associated with the company. With possibly losing their listing on the NYSE soon, it appears that the company will be under sooner than later. Which is a shame as MK vs DC turned out to be a great property along with TNA Impact that did well in sales, it appeared that they could get back on their feet. Sadly I don’t see this happening and my guess is we will see a of the company/properties by the end of the year if not early 1st quarter of next year.

Best Buy
The powerhouse that is probably didn’t help but with closing a majority of their stores for good, today marks the beginning of all their liquidation sales. Unfortunately nothing too exciting on the video game front, but what they have will save you a few bucks at least. Below are the deals you will find in the video game department.

Systems (360, , , DS, PSP) and their respective games - 5% off
All game accessories (controllers, batteries, cases, Xbox Live memberships, etc) - 10% off
“Social” games (aka Rockband and ) - 10% off
PC Games - 10% off
Strategy guides and cheat books - 20% off

I would say the best is the game accessories discount. Considering you can use this on Xbox subs and more than likely points, the savings you can get could equal free games.

Well, I guess things can’t always be perfect.  Since the launch of GH:WT this past Sunday, many people have been reporting sensitivity issues related to their drum kits.  I myself have had issues with my yellow symbol not reading everytime I hit the damn thing.  So for now I’m dealing with the issue, but we do have possible solutions.  One from themselves:

We have learned that certain drum kit controllers manufactured for World Tour have sensitivity issues. We believe that these controllers are limited to ones in the earlier manufacturing stages. While we believe that this was an isolated manufacturing issue, we are stepping our efforts to randomly test our drum kit controllers so customers can be assured they work properly. In the event any consumers do experience problems with their drum kit controllers associated with sensitivity issues, will soon be offering a drum tuning kit that will enable players to fully optimize their drums.

Our goal would be to immediately address any hardware issues World Tour players have with the game. Consumers should visit the Publishing customer support website at www..com/support website or call 310 255-2050 in the U.S. where a customer care representative will assist them. is fully committed to the highest quality manufacturing standards, and to satisfying every World Tour fan so they can enjoy the best musical gaming experience ever created

The other option, which I will be trying when I get home, makes things a little easier.  Follow the instructions on the video and you should have no issues going forward and no modding of your drums is needed.

Apple Oct 14 Invite - Macrumors.com

sent out invites to their next big event on Thursday to the media.  After their (somewhat) big iPod update of last month, this one is taking aim at their notebooks.  Rumors are that the Macbook is going to join the Macbook Pro in style with a aluminum case and that both models will be somewhat slimmer. Apple.pro has provided some interesting photos of what the new 13 inch case might look like. It’s important to know that these are unofficial, but with the announcement so close it makes sense that they are probably the real . The other big rumor of the event is pricing. Inquisitr.com reports that retailers have received 12 price points for the new with one being in the $800 range marking the first sub $1000 laptop if it is true. More info to come on the 14th!

An update for the Xbox360 version of should be available today that will allow users to prep 55 of the 58 songs for playability in 2 for only $5. The songs that will not transfer over are “Paranoid” as made famous by Black Sabbath, “Run to the Hills” as made famous by Iron Maiden, and “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. Metallica will not be available because they have signed an exclusive with for their music. Nothing is stated why the other two bands are not porting over, but it could also have to do with exclusivity to GH4. Even though we here at City endorse 4, you can’t deny how awesome it is of the franchise to give the users this option for the new game thus allowing you to only have to with one disc to play all the content. And as reported earlier, all downloadable content will be valid for 2 (none of this is available for GH3 meaning all DLC will have to be played using the GH3 disc.)

Since man first began brewing, he has tried to find ways to keep his from spoiling too quickly.  The more you can brew at one time, the less time you need to spend brewing.  This was important when every home brewed its own because the local water supply was somewhere between suspicious and rancid.  Also, the yeast in only lives between certain temperatures, so without refrigeration, brewing during the summer was impossible.

We can thank our innovative ancestors for the various styles we drink today, some of which will improve with age.  Anything that is bottle conditioned (you can see a small layer of yeast sediment in the bottom of the bottle) will usually evolve with time.  By storing your upright in a cool, dark, and somewhat humid space, the yeast left in the bottle will continue to slowly feed; and the flavors will continue to meld.  Also, the hops will mellow over time, so aging isn’t always ideal for hop bombs or fresh hop beers.  Barleywines, imperial stouts and porters, old ales, and lambics are all ideal candidates for cellaring.  Some beers will hit their peak at 3-4 years, others will continue to improve as long as their caps survive and don’t allow in any oxygen.

This is a hobby that requires great patience and attention, you can’t obsess about all the good stuff you’ve hidden under the stairs.  This winter, try buying some of these stronger beers and hide a portion away.  After 2-3 years, you can start pulling some out of the cellar to enjoy while you keep adding more to your stash.

So basically The Legend of is the best video game franchise in my opinion. And we all know how much I love reading books. So now that this is coming out, my two greatest loves will be combined. I really am serious about wanting this though.

Amazon description

With both young and adult gamers as loyal fans, The Legend of is one of the most beloved video game series ever created. The contributors to this volume consider the following questions and more: What is the nature of the gamer’s connection to Link? Does Link have a will, or do gamers project their wills onto him? How does the gamer experience the game? Do the rules of logic apply in the game world? How is space created and distributed in Hyrule (the fictional land in which the game takes place)? How does time function? Is ? Can Hyrule be seen as an ideal society? Can the game be enjoyable without winning? The Legend of and not only appeals to fans and philosophers but also puts on the philosophical map as a serious area of study.
