From the folks that brought you “The Texas Chainsaw Musical”:
Presented by New Millennium Theatre.
Nerd City was at the “We Need Each Other” art show @ Oh No! Doom in Chicago. Where the fuck were you?
Chip Kidd, author of “Bat-Manga! The Secret History of Batman in Japan” will be signing and discussing his work @ Chicago Comics, this Tuesday, Nov. 18th from 6-8 p.m.
3244 N. Clark Street
Chicago, Il 60657
So this guy Jason Hackenwerth is a friend of a friend of mine. He is famous in the art world for these elaborate/amazing/beautiful balloon sculptures. I got to hang out with him once when he was in Chicago for a show and he is such a nice, down-to-earth guy. Check him out on this episode of Science Friday.
You can see more photos of his work here at his site
Also if you still aren’t convinced that balloons are ridiculously neat, check out this other cool, balloon-related site: BalloonHat
Its a collection of photos from the adventures of these people who basically travel the globe making balloon hats for people. (You can get more detailed/accurate/true information on the site, because I generally have no idea what I’m talking about.)
Last Saturday, I attended the Illinois Craft Brewers Association’s Sixth Annual Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beers at the Chicago Journeyman Plumbers’ Local Union 130 Stephen M. Bailey Auditorium, and it was the Shit.
Featuring cask aged beers from Three Floyds, Rock Bottom, Surly, Gordon Biersch, and our friends at Piece, and Half Acre, the festival was a boozy, barley-fueled good time. And how were the beers? Well let’s just say the casks weren’t the only ones with wood. For more info, including the winners, check out the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild here.

All this month, Chicago’s Gene Siskel Film Center is showing a retrospective of Jim Henson’s work, including The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, The Dark Crystal, and the David Bowie homo-erotic epic, Labyrinth. Get all the deets here.
Guns N Roses announced today that there will be listening parties in select cities for thier highly annticipated new album, Chinese Democracy. In all seriousness, I am really looking forward to getting my hands on this album when it comes out on the 23rd of this month. So if you are in any of these areas, do yourself a favor and get out there to enjoy some good (well hopefully) music. Oh and one is in Chicago so I expect someone from our crew to get out there and review the event. Details as follows:

Max is a huge fan of Rob Schrab, and he thinks you should be too. Originally from Wisconsin, by far one of Nerd City’s favorite states, Schrab studied at art-school in super-awesome Milwaukee. Whilst there, he created Scud: The Disposable Assassin, one of the best, funniest independent comics ever.
Although long, long, long, delayed (like Chinese Democracy long), Image has recently released the entire series in the new omnibus, “Scud: The Disposable Assassin: The Whole Shebang“, which absolutely rules. Scud is also soon-to-be-released (hopefully) as an action figure from oft-beleagured Shocker Toys, making Scud the word in Nerd, once again.
Following interest (misguided, unfortunately) in turning Scud in to a movie, (at one time the project was even linked to conspiracy king Oliver Stone), and the release of a Scud video game on the ill-fated Sega Saturn, Schrab and writing partner Dan Harmon began a relationship with Robert Zemeckis‘ Image Movers production company, which eventually resulted in the super kick-ass Monster House. Seriously, Monster House is one of the best animated movies ever. It’s like the movies Spielberg (who co-produced) used to make. (Please see Goonies, Gremlins)
At about this time, Schrab and Harmon began work on “Heat Vision and Jack” with Ben Stiller. Widely considered to be one of the best pilots never aired, (by Fox, of course), the show starred a young Jack Black as a man on the run from Ron Silver (as Ron Silver) and NASA, and featured Owen Wilson as the voice of Black’s unemployeed roommate/talking motorcycle Heat Vision. It ruled.
Following the untimely demise of the show, Schrab and Harmon went on to create Channel101.com, an online community for comedic film makers that has included work by Black, Harmon, and Schrab, as well as helping to launch SNL’s The Lonely Island crew. It also spawned one of the greatest internet video series ever, Yacht Rock.
Currently, Schrab works on the sublime, filthy-dirty hilariousness that is “The Sarah Silverman Program” on Comedy Central, which recently opened a third season with their highest ratings ever.
In conclusion, Rob Schrab is the bomb. Thank you.
For continuing Schrab updates, please check out his website, Robschrab.com. And Mr. Schrab, please, keep up the good work.
