Today’s the day, kids! That Trap Jaw that you’ve been drooling over since SDCC last year can finally be yours. Oh, yeah, and there’s also that fully articulated MOTUCBattle Cat! My prediction is that Trap Jaw is going to sell out in record time due to the time that, since he can be turned into a Kronis figure, using the alt head and arm that he comes with, he’s essentially two figures in one.
Yesterday, at Toy Fair in New York, Mattel unveiled quite a bit of new MOTUC stuff. Some of it was insanely exciting, some of it was, frankly, cringe-worthy (and that’s saying a lot when you’re talking MOTU!). The reveal that impressed me the most was the new Whiplash figure that they showed, complete with alt 200x-accurate head. Additionally, Count Marzo will finally be getting his first action figure likeness, as well as a super cool new MOTUCShe-Ra with both 80’s toy accurate and cartoon accurate heads. It was also announced that Keldor will be a “bonus” quarterly figure that will essentially be an variant of Skeletor in much the same way that Battle Armor He-Man was a variant of He-Man. A really big suprise, however, was that there will be an official release of Gygor, the giant yellow ape figure that never made it off of the drawing board of the original line.
Additionally, this sweet rotocasted giant Tytus figure will see reloease this year as another bonus figure. The intertubes are abuzz with controversey over the fact that he’s not going to be quite as large as the vintage version of the figure. But, what can you do? All in all a pretty cool re-design. Also, at Tytus’s feet, you can see pieces from what will be a bonus “Weapons Pack” that will feature additional weapons and accessories for your figures in alternate colors.
And then there’s this thing. It was announced that one of the MOTUCexclusives for SDCC this year will be this tow pack, featuring Skeletor (with a missing tooth) and Mo-Larr, the Eternian Dentist. Whatever. I’m all for poking fun at MOTU, but I always felt that the Robot chicken Mo-Larr sketch was honestly pretty lame. Here it is, in case you’ve never seen it:
Also worth noting is that Mattel unveiled a second DCUC vs. MOTUC 2 pack that will feature Skeletor vs. Lex Luthor. The comic-style recolor of Skeletor is pretty cool, but in general, the whole thing is pretty “meh” for me. It will, however, get MOTUC on the shelves of Toys R Us. So, I suppose that’s cool.

Just a reminder that tonight is going to be a huge night in the MOTU world and the art world at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. Their Masters of the Universe-themed “Under the Influence” show opening is tonight from 7-10 and this mind blowing piece by Nerd City favorite Meggs is another example of the works that will also be on display.
Not to be forgotten is the fact that Mattel has not only embraced the show, but will also be contributing to this evening’s opening by unveiling one of this year’s SDCC exclusive figures there.
Over the last few days, many previews have been popping up all over the net of pieces for the show that I have not yet covered on this blog. After the jump, there are a few more of my favorites. (more…)
Our friends from Shocker Toys are headed to Wizard World Chicago (or Chicago Comic Con, or whatever I’m supposed to call it), and they’re bringing a whole bunch of cool stuff with them! Not only will they their Indie Spotlight line for sale, but also a few of their past con exclusives. This is also your chance to pick up that Dr. Rockzo Mallow. Keep your fingers crossed that they have that Zen prototype that they were showing @ SDCC there, as well.
Ok, I promise, this is the end of my SDCCMOTUC coverage. I found a few more vids that everyone might be interested in checking out. First up is the video or the, erm, Mattypalooza pannel that Mattel did on Friday that covered not only MOTUC, but also a bit of DCUC and all of their Ghostbusters stuff.
The Four Horsemen have created some amazing stuff with Mattel’s DC Universe Classics line in the past, but the Kilowog that they unveiled @ SDCC this past week has to be one of their most exciting pieces, yet. Kilowog will be the giant collect and connect figure that is a part of DCUC wave 11. The wave will also contain Cyborg Superman, Deadman, Jon Stewart Green Lantern, female Green Lantern, The Question, Shark, and Steppenwolf plus green variant (50/50).

Revealed at SDCC this weekend, Lucas Arts showed off the latest DLC for The Force Unleashed. In the new DLC, you will be taking on the guise of a quite evil looking apprentice for the Sith, while tracking down “problems” for The Emperor. Looks like you’ll be fighting Luke, Obi-Wan and Boba Fett, along with many other characters from the later episodes. No date or price point yet, but if you still have the game this looks like some good content.
Super kudos to the guys @ ToyArk.com who did an amazing job of covering Mattel’s SDCCMOTUC pannel. In a nutshell, here’s what we can expect from MOTUC in the upcoming months:
Our friends @ Top Shelf Productions will be debuting an animated short based on Andy Runton’s beloved Owly character @ San Diego Comic Con. With a “The Surrogates” movie starring Bruce Willis due in September, and this promising interpretation of one of their flagship properties, Top Shelf is poised to make a serious impact on the future of multimedia Nerd-dom in the very near future.
Yesterday it was confirmed that Jean Grey and Gambit will be playable characters in the upcoming Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2. Gambit has been rumored as he appears on mock up art for the cover of the game, but now he is officially confirmed. The line-up for this game keeps getting better and better and if it’s anything like the first game, the sequel will be fantastic.
SEGA has released the first trailer for Iron Man 2, which is set to be released next year to coincide with the 2nd movie. Now we all know the first game was pretty much horrible, so I’m hoping that this one is better. Based off of the trailer it appears that there will more ground fighting, which is good, because the flight controls were the worst aspect of the last game. Not much is known about the story except that it will feature Crimson Dynamo and appears to be based off of Starktech being used around the world without Tony’s knowledge. The game is being written by Matt Fraction, so at least the story should be good. Iron Man 2 will be available to demo at the SEGA booth at the San Diego Comic Con this weekend.
On a side note, now that I’m back in the states I will look to have more updates coming through…especially with SDCC this weekend.
O.K., yes. The need for every toymaker to jump on the vinyl platform toy bandwagon is beyond obnoxious. I’ll give you that. But Mattel has just unveiled the prototypes to their attempt at a Mighty Mugg, the Attitubes. How can I not love these stylized versions of Mer-Man, Webstor and Orko? Sign me up. I’m in.
Also worth noting is that last night at SDCC preview night, we got to check out the MOTUCBattle Cat and some better shots of Teela with her alt head.

Do you remember the awesomeness that was/is Zen the Intergalactic Ninja? It was seriously one of my favorite books in the early 90’s. Well, there’s good news for Zen fans, courtesy of Zen’s creators, Steve Stern and Dan Cote, and Shocker toys! BTW, it’s all going down at SDCC.
From Steve and Dan:
Steve Stern and Dan Cote will be appearing at the Shocker Toys booth at Comic-Con 2009.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) – Jul 21, 2009 – 100 fans will receive a free copy of an autographed ‘Zen Intergalactic Ninja’ comic-book at this year’s Comic-Con.
The give-away event will occur on Friday and Saturday, July 24 and 25, to celebrate the upcoming release of two new ‘Zen’ figures from Shocker Toys.
Stern and Cote will appear at Shocker Toys booth #3849 on both days from 2 to 3 PM. The first 50 fans to arrive at the booth each day will receive a highly collectible ‘Zen’ comic signed by both creators. Among the books will be ‘Zen Intergalactic Ninja’ #1 from 1987.
Shocker Toys will be promoting the upcoming release of a 7-inch hyper-articulated Zen action figure, as well as a 5-inch Mallow designer figure of the alien hero at Comic-Con.
“These incredible new figures will be absolutely indispensable to collectors, because they’re the first Zen figures to feature the ET’s new facial appearance, which includes a nose and mouth, as well as his contoured breathing mask,” said Cote.
Fans will remember that Zen literally grew his new face in the landmark ‘Zen: Bounty Hunter’ story. The 50-page story can be read online at www.zenintergalacticninja.com.
“We’re looking forward to meeting both old and new fans at the Shocker Toys booth,” said Stern, “and to making lots of them very happy with a free autographed comic-book.”
A 7 inch hyper-articulated Zen figure from Shocker? Yes! Yes! Yes!
This is not only a testament to the coolness of the Zen character, but also the quality of indie comic properties upon which Shocker is choosing to base their toys.

Remember those sweet Bebop and Rocksteady pieces from Alex Deligiannis that I blogged about a while back? Well, if you’re going to be @ SDCC this year, you can pick up some high quality prints of them from Alex, himself.
They’re super-limited to only 50 prints each, so stop by booth 1034 early if you want to get them!
