I love the idea of portraits being painted of classic toys and action figures. Especially if the artist doing the portraits is the awesomely talented Bwana Spoons!
From Bwana Spoons:
so i got an awesome commission to do my entire star wars figure collection and them some. I think about 120 portraits, most of which are pretty small, then the opus mcpopeus at the end with the whole pile in a pile together.

As seen above, Mr. Spoons has already tackled the classic Luke figure and Admiral Ackbar (yes, it could very well be a trap), as well as a Cloud Car Driver and Walrus Man.

To follow along with this project, be sure to check back here often, but you can also regularly check this folder from Bwana Spoons’s Flickr.
Or, check out his official home on the intertubes here.

“The Last Unicorn” art show’s website is now up here. Featuring Nerd Citizens Lana Crooks, Jenny Frisson, and Steve Seeley, as well as original creator Peter S. Beagle, this event coincides with C2E2 and is going to be badass and super unicorn-y.

For me, the Steregon sculpt from Nerd One is one of the coolest Kaiju sculpts to come out in recent times. He’s based upon a cool concept (speakers for eyes!), is in a great pose, and has pretty decent articulation for a vinyl Kaiju piece. This particular colorway is for Mark Nagata’s Kaiju Comrades 2 show (which happens to take place at The Design Fiesta Gallery in Harajuku, Tokyo this weekend!). It’s a far more colorful version than the last one and now includes a sweet club as an accessory.
Want more info on the Kaiju Comrades 2 show? Check out this video:
The official Kaiju Comrades site is here.
If you’re in Tokyo April 12th-14th, you really should check out the show. Oh, and you should probably buy this for me, too. Thanks!
Alright. So, the idea is that we intend to have a bunch of cool stuff going on at Nerd City’s booth throughout the entire C2E2 weekend (April 16-18). First and foremost of which will be an amazing lineup of artists doing live art, signings, and selling limited edition merch! Keep checking back here as we get closer to the event for all of the exciting details. We are ready, however, to unveil the lineup for Saturday. Here goes:
11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
1-3 p.m.
and Joey Potts!
Stay tuned to Nerd City for more developments, but also be sure to click on each artist’s image to go to their official sites. That way, you can keep up to date on all of their plans for the day and check out all of their great works.
It should be a blast. If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, get them here! And, be sure to use priority code WL192 when you get them. That will help Max get that gold-plated car that he’s been wanting.
Also, you probably want to follow us all to the Double Door later that evening for Nerd City’s Official C2E2 After Party! It will feature music by the Jai Alai Savant, dj sets by Genghis Won and Major Taylor, Nerd Burlesque from the Flaming Dames, and a Swedish Invasion signing from Top Shelf Comics. You can get your tickets here. And, be sure to rsvp for the event here.
Capcom has officially announced the long rumored, and pretty damn near confirmed, inclusion of Hakan in Super Street Fighter IV. Hakan is a brand new character created for this game and based off of the below videos, he seems to be a cross between Zangief and Abel. I’m not too sure why they are relying on his gimmick of being oily and what not, but it clearly is a big part of his offense. Super Street Fighter IV will be released on April 27th for PS3 and Xbox 360. For those interested in the iPhoneversion of SFIV, it is now available for download for $10.
Nerds worldwide are still waiting to hear how Amazon.com is going to handle a recent graphic novel pricing snafu that could cost the internet giant thousands of dollars and formally-dedicated consumers.
Blamed on a computer glitch, the mistake resulted in normally-expensive hardcover comic omnibus’ being sold for as low as $8. Originally reported on Bleeding Cool, Nerds from all over the world flocked to the mistake, buying multiple copies of each mislabeled book, skewing Amazon’s bestseller list for the better of two days. Now, Nerds want to know what will happen with their orders, as reports have surfaced of multiple cancellations and modifications.
The question is “what should be done?”. Should Amazon be punished for their mistake? Is it the Nerds, who technically have done nothing wrong, that should suffer?
Normally, this sort of thing could easily be ignored, but the sheer number of dollars involved, and the whole live-by-the-internet/die-by-the-internet thing makes this story of particular interest to us here @ Nerd City. Stay tuned for more updates as this clash of Nerd-ery continues.
Piece Brewery (awesome sponsor and home of the world-famous Nerd City podcast) is hosting their “Jam For Haiti” featuring legendary Cheap Trick-er Rick Nielsen Tonight!
Party starts @ 9 p.m. With beer sales and $5 cover going to an important cause, you can finally use your drinking problem for good (after so much bad).

Valve has announced today that they will officially be bringing their very popular service, Steam, to the Mac platform next month. For those not familiar Steam is the one stop place for all new, and some old, PC games. Steam allows a direct download of games directly to a customers account allowing them to load the games up on any PC that has steam installed. Steam also will constantly keep the software up to date and over all is just an easier way to get and play your computer games. Pricing of games vary from publisher to publisher and there is no offiical date on when this will go out live in April. But the good news is that if anyone owns a Mac and has been wanting a fast easy way to play Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, Half-Life or many other games, you will now be able to starting next month. Full Press release after the jump.
Our good buddies over @ apparel/designer toy shop Jugrnaut are helping to host this badass show featuring Nerd City favorite Gza, and heart-attack-prone drunken Irish rappers House of Pain @ Chicago’s Congress Theater.
This should be a super rad show, and it’s awesome that Jugrnaut is bringing it.

This amazing custom was done in response to the desire by many fans for a Superman in the Superman Vs. He-Man 2 pack that would match the size of the Masters of the Universe Classics figures.

Capcom will be releasing a mini version of Street Fighter IV for the iPhone and iPod Touch later this month. As you can see in the video below, the game looks really nice but my only concern is that your fingers will take up most of the real estate on the screen. By having the full joystick and buttons cover the bottom left and right corners of the screen, I can see this taking away from the game considering you loose a good amount of screen space while playing. No exact release date or price is set yet, but maybe if this does well Capcom will start to release more games for the iPhone and what not. Mega Man would probably play and sell quite well on the system.
This week’s “Double Door Show of the Week” is a doozy. The Reverend Horton Heat is in town for two nights. Two nights!
Friday, March 5th is Psycho night, and Saturday March 6th is Billy Night. Both shows start @ 9 p.m. I am a big fan of the Rev, and this should be a helluva pair of shows.
In fact, Nerd City and the Double Door are so cool, the first person to email max@nerdcityonline.com with subject heading “The Rev”, will get a free pair of tickets to the Saturday night show.
For those who don’t win, get your tickets here.
In what will hopefully be the first of a regular series of blog entries in which I highlight some of my personal favorite pieces from my collection, I have chosen to look at one of the coolest, my vintage-style MOTU anthropomorphic Panthor figure from the guys at COTU. This particular piece was primarily done by Galaxy Warrior from said collective and is fully flocked and maintains all of the articulation of a vintage MOTU figure. He also came with an additional baby Panthor cub, which is very cool. Due to very unfortunate circumstances, COTU no longer works together as an artistic collective. They have, however, left us with an incredible body of work (like this figure!) to remember them by.
As I said before, this one-off custom is one of my personal favorite pieces in my collection. He really looks like what this figure would have looked like had Mattel made one back in the 80’s. The paint and flock apps are impeccably clean, and he’s surprisingly sturdy for a custom of this level of complexity. All in all, it’s an amazing piece from concept to execution.

Although it’s obviously been quiet for quite some time, the COTU blog is a great resource for much of the body of their work. Check it out here.
