One of the best things about being a Nerd is the ability to endlessly gloat amongst your friends (those that you have) about having been “the first” to discover something. Whatever the medium, there is nothing quite like the thrill of dropping an “uh…yah” on the uninitiated, before it was, you know, cool. With that in mind, we present to you “The Selling“, Nerd City’s pick for “We Saw it First” this Halloween season.
Not only THE funniest indie in years, “The Selling” is also one of the best horror coms…pretty much ever. Laugh out loud funny (a bunch of times), “The Selling” is the story of the aptly-named Richard Scarry, a too-nice-for-his-job real estate agent who unknowingly buys a haunted house, and his inspired-yet-ill-fated attempts to flip said property.
Deftly produced, directed, and acted, “The Selling” avoids the traditional pitfalls of indie, horror, and comedy film-making, and the inspired ingenuity demonstrated is reminiscent of other breakout films of the genre (i.e. Evil Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil).
Although the film will most likely generate buzz from the brief but memorable turns by Simon Helberg (The Big Bang Theory) and Barry Bostwick (of Rocky Horror and Spin City fame), the real stars are Gabriel Diani (who also wrote the film) and his amazing (but reasonably unknown) supporting cast. Diani’s ability to carry a film is admirable, and there is no doubt we will be seeing plenty more from the nebbish (and hilarious) leading man (hopefully in more projects of this caliber, and not resigned to the inevitable lovable best friend on some show no one gives a shit about).
Thanks to the beauty of the digital age, “The Selling” is available for purchase and download on multiple formats, so you have no excuse not to rub an early screening of the film in all of your Nerdy friends’ faces.
