So, amazingly, it appears that summer may actually soon be upon us. And that means only one thing: drunken outdoor buffoonery to music.
And here in the Nerd City, we have plenty of options. With both Pitchfork and Lollapalooza in city limits, and Summerfest right next door in the good land of Milwaukee, there will be no shortage of sunburns, tank tops, and Tazmanian Devil tattoos to ironically gawk at while getting plowed.
Pitchfork (July 16-18 @ Union Park) features an assortment of glasses-wearing, shoe-gazer superstars, including Pavement and Modest Mouse, plus Raekwon, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, LCD Soundsystem, Wolf Parade and best-band-name-ever Delorean (from Barcelona, fancy). Of all the fests, I would probably say this is the one I am most stoked about. Although 3-day passes are already sold out, you can still get 1-day passes here.
As for the return of Chicago’s annual Palooza, (Aug 6-8 @ Grant Park) this year’s line-up is also chock-full of rock Nerd-ery, with performances by super-badass Arcade Fire, The Strokes, The Black Keys, Spoon, Jimmy Cliff and Wolfmother, amongst others. Plus Lollapalooza has the golden jewel in this summer’s Nerd-music-fest crown: DEVO! That’s right, Nerd luminaries Devo will be there. Get your tickets to see Devo!!! (and Lady Ga Ga, if that’s your thing) @ Lollapalooza here.
And last, but not least, is Milwaukee’s great gift to the world: Summerfest (June 24-July 4 Henry Maier Festival grounds)! Dear to Nerd City’s hearts, Summerfest is consistently one of, if not the best outdoor music festivals in the entire universe. Summerfest goes to 11, with 11 days of drunken revelry, sausage and music, with Tom Petty, Public Enemy, Cage the Elephant, old men Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey, Weird (fucking) Al, The Scorpions, and repeat fest-ers Devo and Modest Mouse! Seriously, with both Weird Al and Devo, this could be Nerdiest music fest of all time. Get all your Summerfest 2010 info here.
