Lionsgate picks up Mark Millars Kick Ass

Kick Ass Movie
Lionsgate officially announced yesterday that they have secured the rights to distribute the upcoming adaption of Mark Millars Kick Ass. Based off of the Icon comic book created by Millar and John Romita Jr, Kick Ass is the story of an average teenager who decides to basically become a super hero and go around fighting crime. This eventually leads to an encounter with Big Daddy and Hit Girl, two other ordinary people who want to do their part against crime as well…basically think The Punisher with a daughter who is just as deadly as him. I’ve been a fan of the comic since day one and if you like over the top violence but with a story still grounded in the real world, do yourself a favor and pick this up before the movie comes out next year. Issues 1-6 are already out, with issues 7 & 8 coming out soon.

This movie is an interesting experiment in film as Matthew Vaughn, the director, financed this film 100% out of pocket as every studio passed on this movie due to concerns with the violence a 10-year old girl would be performing. But based off of the 20mins I saw at Chicago Con and the reaction that was received, Hit Girl will be quite the popular character with the general population after this film is released.

No official word on a release date, but I would say probalby March or April of 2010. The film stars Aaron Johnson (Dummy), Chole Moretz (Big Mommas House 2), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Role Models) and Nicolas Cage (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Ghost Rider)
