I’ve never really had a reason to want an Xbox 360, but with the Left For Dead series being exclusive and their fantastic summer arcade line-up it is getting more tempting. The latest offering for download through the Xbox Live Arcade is Shadow Complex by Chair Entertainment. What makes this game so interesting you ask? Well it’s a fantastic 3D art style game that plays as a 2D platformer, in the vain of Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Being interviewed by Kotaku, Chair Entertainments co-founder Donald Mustard revealed that Super Metroid was the inspiration for the game.
“It seems like there was this huge void,” Mustard said, saying that Shadow Complex explores a largely unexplored genre. “No one’s making these kinds of games. So we decided, well, we’re gonna try it. My biggest secret hope is that some awesome game designer will look at what we did and think ‘I could do that even better,’ and make a game that I can play.”
“We really looked at Metroid more than Castlevania,” he said. “We made everyone replay Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission. Everyone on the team played that for a week or two, but I played them constantly… to the point where I had felt like I had cleansed my system of anything other than Metroid.”
I am so glad to see developers take the 2D platformer genre seriously again and hope that this will lead to more 2D action games. With Marvel vs Capcom 2 being released today (go buy that now) and Shadow Complex and the Turtles in Time remake coming out later this summer, it is a good time to be an Xbox 360 owner if you enjoy 2D games.
