On “The State”

July 29, 2009

So now that MTV’s “The State” is finally out on DVD, I can take a moment to gush about just how fucking sweet this show is.

For those younger Nerd Citizens. “The State”, a sketch show with an eleven member ensemble,  debuted on MTV in January 1994. The cast included Michael ShowalterDavid Wain, Michael Ian Black, Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant, Kerri Kenney, Ken Marino, and Joe Lo Truglio. Sketches included such memorable characters as “Doug”, “Louie: The guy who comes in and keeps saying his catchphrase over and over again”, and “The Jew, The Italian and The Red Head Gay”.

I’d love to get it, but I heard they replaced a lot of the original music soundtrack with generic music, due to copyright issues. Is this true? If so, no Barry & Levon dipping their behinds in $240 worth of pudding to the sweet melody of Sexual Healing.
