So I have to admit, when I first heard about the possibility of a Spider-Man musical, I was intrigued. Although not neccessarily a fan of musical theater, (unlike Ben, who’s absolutely ape-shit for them), I thought it might make an interesting stage show. Then, I got the details.
At first, I was still reasonably down. DIrector Julie Taymor had demonstrated the ability to handle extravagant, special effects driven theater in the past with her work on “The Lion King“, and although I heard “Across The Universe” was a clunker, it seemed like a good choice, (mainly because she’s the only musical director I’ve heard of.) I was even O.K. with the rumored casting of “The Wrestler“‘s Evan Rachel Wood. However, after a little more research, I want to make sure I call “crap” as early as possible, to avoid any confusion once this thing comes out.
First of all, I was devastated, devastated, to find out that the all-time greatest producer of stupid shit ever, U2, will be responsible for the music. Now, as the hunt for Peter Parker continues, with current American Idol Adam Lambert having been a previous front-runner, and the recent buzz about the casting of Alan Cumming as the Green Goblin, the pre-production has already reached a previously thought impossible level of lameness.
Alan Cumming? Look, I appreciate the guy’s musical theater talent, and he did pull off Nightcrawler in X2, but really…Alan Cumming? As the Green Goblin? If anything, Bono should be the Green Goblin. Look @ the silmilarities:
Anyway, the good news is that you only have to wait until February 2010 to see yet another favorite Nerd property get shit on.
